SEO Checklist for a Small Business Website
SEO is easier to manage when it is broken into a sequence. Start with crawlability and indexing, then improve page relevance, internal links, performance and useful content while measuring what Google actually shows in Search Console.
1. Make sure Google can crawl the site
Check HTTPS, robots.txt, status codes, redirects and whether important pages are publicly accessible. A page that search engines cannot fetch cannot become a reliable organic landing page.
2. Create and submit a sitemap
Keep an XML sitemap containing canonical, indexable URLs. Submit it through Google Search Console and keep it updated when important pages are added or removed. Google notes that a sitemap helps discovery but does not guarantee indexing.
3. Give every important page a purpose
Use a unique title, description, clear H1 and useful body content. Service pages should target commercial intent; guides should answer questions; case studies should demonstrate experience.
4. Improve internal linking
Link related pages together using descriptive anchor text. A service page can link to relevant guides and case studies, while articles can point readers back to the service they support.
5. Improve mobile performance
Optimize images, avoid unnecessary JavaScript, reserve image dimensions to reduce layout shift and keep the critical page experience fast. Test with PageSpeed Insights and real-user data when available.
6. Add structured data where it genuinely fits
Use appropriate schema such as Organization, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, Article or Service. Structured data helps search engines classify content but is not a guarantee of a rich result.
7. Measure before making big claims
Search Console provides queries, impressions, clicks, indexing information and page-level signals. Use those measurements to decide which pages need better content or stronger internal links.
